A recent study by analyst group Xyologic suggests that less than 1 million homes are using Google TV. In order to determine this, the group used data from the Android Market to analyze the number of app downloads for Google TV products. Though this isn’t an ideal method and won’t provide a perfect picture of user-ship (especially given the low number of apps available), it seems to be the closest we can get without Google releasing numbers themselves (which isn’t likely).

With few current options to purchase a Google TV (the Revue having been discontinued and Sony HDTVs currently not in production), the chances of Google TV truly cracking the living room market are looking dim. Will the number of new Google TV devices hitting shelves later this year be able to compete with the Apple TV, also rumored for release this year? At this rate, perhaps not.

YouTube has announced the release of YouTube remote to the Android Market, which allows you to control YouTube Leanback on Google TV from your Android device. The application is similar to Apple’s Airplay in the sense that you can continue playing a video you’re watching on your phone when you come in range of your Google TV device.

It connects to your Google account, and then when YouTube remote detects that you’ve opened a YouTube app on another device (be it your computer or Google TV), it will automatically start playing on that device. This feature can be turned off in the application if you would like to tell it manually when you would like to continue watching on a different device.

The application is free, and is available now in the Android Market (or scan the QR code below). Also, be on the lookout for a mini review of YouTube Remote in the coming days.

Logitech Harmony iPhone

In a reply posted on Twitter today, Logitech made the following statement:

Control your #LogitechRevue from your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Android device. Find out more here: http://bit.ly/aomeJp

Despite this Twitter message however, at this time the Logitech Harmony App does not appear to be available in Apple’s App Store.

This is rather curious, given the fact that the Android application was released on the Android Market last Thursday. Why would Logitech not release both apps on the same day? We’re currently trying to track down some information from Logitech, so stay tuned.

Update: Logitech has given us the following information:

the iPhone app for Logitech Harmony is coming soon! When it arrives, here is how to find the app: http://bit.ly/bgP8o8

Once the app becomes available, here are the instructions for how to find and install it on your iPhone/iPad.

  1. Select on the App Store icon.
  2. Select Search.
  3. In the search box, type Logitech Harmony.
  4. Select Free next to the Logitech Harmony app.
  5. Select Install to download and install the Logitech Harmony app onto your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

Since Google TV was first announced back in May at I/O, we’ve been hearing up and down that it would be launched in the fall. Well, if Intel CEO Paul Otellini’s words hold true, we now have a more definitive date.

Otellini, speaking to the Wall Street Journal, has revealed that Google TV will begin shipping this month, although he did not specifically mention when, or which products may be included. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on either the Logitech Revue, or the Dish box, but I am a terrible gambler, so take that for what it’s worth.

He also revealed that Intel is responsible for 50% of the code in Google TV, which may reveal just how important the CPU is in all of this. Also, when asked about the new Apple TV, he answered that they are two different products that will likely appeal to two different audiences.

That’s all the information we have for you right now, but stay tuned for more details as this story develops.

We figured this would be the case, but Google has now confirmed that the iPhone will indeed be able to act as a controller for Google TV. In case you haven’t watched the Google TV demo at IFA from earlier today, Google’s Product Marketing Manager, Brittany Bohnet, mentioned that users will be able to control Google TV from both an iPhone, and an Android device.

This will likely come in the form of a Logitech Harmony Link app for the iPhone, which will allow for the control of not only Google TV, but other peripherals as well.

Yesterday, Roku announced they have lowered prices across their entire line of streaming set-top-boxes, in anticipation of competition from other Internet TV devices like Google TV. Their SD (standard definition) box is now $59.99, their HD offering is now $69.99, and their high end HD-XR is now $99.99. The SD box is down $20 from $79.99, and both the HD and HD-XR are down $30 dollars.

Roku currently offers a variety of streaming options, including channels for Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, as well as content from the NBA, MLB, and UFC sports associations. The pricing is clearly an attempt to give them an edge over companies like Google, Apple, and Boxee, which are all expected to be releasing products this fall. In terms of functionality, however, we will have to wait and see how the Roku box will stand up against the other offerings.

Youtube store

Source: Financial Times | Via: NewTeeVee

Google is continuing its quest for online video distribution supremacy, according to reports that the search giant is currently wooing over Hollywood studios in an effort to land additional pay-per-view deals for YouTube. Pay-per-view already exists on YouTube in the form of the YouTube Store, but these deals would result in a global service which Google hopes will be ready for launch by the end of 2010.

The media has been discussing Google a lot these days, particularly how they are reportedly having difficulty landing network deals to bring more content to Google TV. However, if these new deals turn out to be successful, they could very well bring Google a step closer in their quest for providing Google TV with more streaming video.

Jobs TV

Source: AppleInsider

Say what you want about Apple and its founder, Steve Jobs, but the man knows his stuff. So when he comes out and says that the next version of Apple TV will not be a mainstream hit right away, perhaps we should take a few notes. Sources close to Jobs have revealed to Peter Burrows of Bloomberg that he feels most consumers are simply not ready to cut out their cable or satellite provider all together.

That, coupled with the fact that most studios are refusing to allow Apple to sell subscriptions to their content, Jobs is more focused on video for the iPhone and iPad and letting Apple TV remain a hobby. If Apple really has faced resistance from the networks and studios, Google is likely to face just as much, if not more, of an uphill battle getting content providers on board for Google TV.

Priced at $99 dollars, Apple’s new device is expected to be called iTV and have access to the App Store, making it an affordable option for consumers looking for some access to what they love about the Web.

Update: So it seems that Engadget has reported about a special, invite only, Apple event next Wednesday, September 1st. While it appears to be largely music focused, it’s quite possible that iTV may be announced as well. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
