Reports are coming in that the much anticipated Google TV Honeycomb update will begin an OTA update on Monday, August 29th. The update, which promises both speed and aesthetic improvements, has received mixed early reviews for being pretty to look at but not bringing much to the table in terms of added functionality. The update will also usher in the era of apps on Google TV, but both the quality and quantity of apps that will be available has yet to be determined.
I must repeat the fact that these are anonymous reports, and that we have yet to confirm the release date with our sources at Google and Logitech. We’re checking in with the motherships, so be sure to check back for updates.
Update: Logitech is saying end of September, so treat this rumor for what it is: a rumor.
Way back in August, we wrote about the multiple benefits of an ARM powered Google TV device, and in November it was reported that Google and ARM were holding talks over such a venture. Reports are coming in that an ARM powered Google TV device is coming very soon, although no specifics about pricing, hardware specs, or a release date are known at this time.
An ARM powered Google TV device would be cheaper, and would simply make more sense for developers given the fact that the vast majority of Android phones run on ARM chips. We spoke with ARM at CES, and they were unwilling to make any kind of official statement at this time. However, I am still fairly confident that we will see this come to light sometime in 2011, so stay tuned.

Earlier today we told you that Vizio has formally announced their Google TV offerings a couple days before CES, which came via press release. We now know that the company will be releasing Google TV powered HDTVs and Blu-ray players, but there is something else that struck me about the press release that will be very exciting if true. The image above was included in the press release, which clearly shows one of their Google TV powered HDTVs with a lot more apps than the Google TV we know today.
It is entirely possible that this is just a mockup image meant to generate some buzz and excitement about the product, or perhaps this is what they intend the interface to look like once the Market is released sometime this year. However, with Vizio supposedly planning to show off their new device(s) at CES, perhaps we will get to see an early build of the next version of Google TV featuring the Android Market. We will be there beginning on Wednesday to bring you all the latest and greatest, and we will certainly do our best to get a sneak peak at the new goods! Stay tuned.
Despite Google’s unexpected request on Monday for manufacturers to hold off on new Google TV hardware until the software can be improved, rumor has it that Samsung and Vizio are both still planning to showcase their Google TV hardware at CES next month.
According to the original NYT article, Vizio will demo their product in a private room rather than on the main floor (we’ll be trying our darndest to get in there), and Samsung will be going ahead as planned with their introduction as well. While on the subject of the original NYT article, as a reader pointed out, the only sources used are “people familiar with the company’s plans,” and until Google or the other manufacturers make some kind of formal announcement, perhaps it’s a bit early to panic.
We will be on hand at CES to bring you the latest and greatest in whatever ends up happening, so be sure to check back often during the convention for all the updates.

In case you missed it yesterday, Google dropped a bit of a bomb by asking manufacturers to delay all future Google TV devices until they have a chance to make improvements to the software. The news certainly came as a surprise, and has left many people questioning the future of the platform.
In the midst of all this news, Intel may now be quietly trying to distance themselves from the Google TV brand, despite being the company that provides the chips that power all of the current Google TV devices. The photo above is of an ad that was spotted in a NYC subway station, and while it advertises Smart TV, there is no mention of Google TV whatsoever. There is also the Boxee logo next to the giant text, but the ad seems to primarily be plugging Smart TV rather than Boxee itself.
Sources are saying that Google is planning on extending and marketing its movie streaming service beginning in 2011. There is no date about when an announcement will be made, but I would put my money on either CES or IO.
Ex-Netflix exec Robert Kyncl is currently negotiating deals with studio heads, and the focus is currently on top tier films. It’s also being speculated that the technology from the recently acquired Widevine will power this streaming service. Google has yet to make a comment on the subject, so stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

It would appear that Microsoft is planning an Xbox 360 service which would take on Google TV by offering content streamed over the Internet. Microsoft is reportedly in talks with networks and content providers to license content which could be accessed for a monthly fee. It is not exactly clear what Microsoft is planning at this point, but another possibility could be some sort of interactive service that would go along with a users current cable or satellite service.
Whatever they end up doing, it’s likely that it will be something quite different from Google TV or Apple TV, so stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

It would appear that Google is trying to nab the rights to Miramax’s expansive film library for YouTube, in an effort to bring more full-length content to both YouTube and Google TV. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Google is in talks with Filmyard Holdings, the company that will likely be buying the struggling Film studio, over what would likely be a deal in the hundreds of millions.
Supposedly Netflix has also expressed an interest in acquiring the rights, which is not surprising to say the least. Miramax’s film library includes titles like Pulp Fiction, No Country For Old Men and Kill Bill.

So we told you the other day that there was a pretty big rumor floating around that Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) was dropping yesterday. Well, yesterday came and went, and there’s not a crumb of Gingerbread to be found. Don’t get your hopes up just yet folks, because a tweet was sent out by the official @GoogleMobile account that stated: “Our cafes are baking something sweet”, and included the above photo.
The current rumor is that Gingerbread is landing on November 15th instead, so take it for what it’s worth.

The other day, we brought you a rumor that the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) SDK was going to be dropping on November 11. Well, now it seems that someone on the leadership team of the Open Handset Alliance (one of the governing bodies that backs Android) has tweeted the following:
Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android OTA update 2.3 (Gingerbread) in the next few days:-D
Obviously Android users are anxious for Android 2.3, but Google TV users may also be wondering when they may see some Gingerbread love on their GTV devices. Seeing as there’s no word as to when we may be getting 2.2 (Froyo), or whether or not they’ll make the jump straight to 2.3, we may be waiting for a while. Stay tuned.
