Sony and Google TV were honored as a CES 2011 “Best Innovation” for the Sony Internet TV and Blu-ray Player. Sony joins such products as the HP Photosmart eStation, Microsoft’s Kinect, and the HTC EVO 4G.
It is certainly nice to see Sony and Google receive this award for Google TV, and here’s to hoping that this is just one of many such honors we’ll be seeing in 2011. You can check out the full list of honorees here.

Earlier today, we told you that Samsung was showing off two unannounced Google TV devices here at CES. Well, they are no longer unannounced, as Sammy has issued a press release formally announcing their foray into Google TV. No real concrete information has been released, other than the fact that it will be available sometime before the end of the 1st half of this year.
Continue after the break for the press release and for our photo gallery of Samsung’s Google TV set-top box and Blu-ray players.
Earlier today we had the opportunity to check out Vizio’s private CES showroom to get a look at the new Vizio VIA Plus with Google TV. We already uploaded our image gallery, but we also shot a brief video demo in the short time we had to check out the device, which you can check out after the break.

Earlier today we spent some time at Vizio’s private CES showroom for some exclusive time with their new Vizio Via Plus with Google TV. They had both the 55″ and 47″ models on display, and let me tell you, these are some nice TVs. Unfortunately the Blue-ray players were not on display, and we were informed they are still in the development phase.
I was able to confirm that the press image which features apps that don’t ship with Google TV is in fact a mockup. While the Vizio Google TV features their custom Android skin, the TV will be shipping with the default Google TV apps we have currently. These TV’s are also glasses 3D ready, with a 460 hz refresh rate
Continue after the break to check out some of the shots, and stay tuned for a brief video demonstration as well.
It usually doesn’t take a motivated hacker long to get their hands into filesystems, especially on Google devices. The Logitech Revue is no different, other than it may have taken a little longer for them to break in. Here, we see the Logitech Revue with Google TV being rooted, gaining full access to the GTV file system.
If you have a Logitech Revue, and are considering trying this at home, let this be a mild warning to you as it will take some hardware manipulation, along with a little patience, and a soldering kit. If it happens to not work as expected, there’s no turning back as you’ll need a new one unfortunately. More info is available at the source below.

On Monday we told you that Vizio had released some information about their foray into Google TV with their Blue-ray player and Via Plus HDTV line. We are now happy to tell you that Vizio has issued a press release formally announcing some additional details about the devices, including the model number and screen size of the two TVs. From the release:
The XVT3D476SP and XVT3D556SP are part of the new VIZIO VIA Plus ecosystem that combines the convenience of entertainment on demand with a consistent and seamless experience across all devices in the ecosystem, including the VIZIO Phone and VIZIO Tablet. VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) Plus TVs, which will incorporate the Google TV platform, feature a sophisticated and intuitive user interface that allows users to access their favorite apps as well as search and browse the web using a premium Bluetooth QWERTY universal remote with touchpad and built-in dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.
The 476SP is a 47-inch model, and the 556SP is a 55-inch model. We don’t have any info about pricing or a release date (or whether or not it will be shipping with the Android Market and Vizio’s new custom Android skin), but we will be getting some hands on time at Vizio’s private CES showroom this Thursday, so stay tuned for some exclusive photos and information. Continue after the break for the full press release.
Last month, we told you about a startup called Snapstick which was looking to take on Google TV and other ITV devices with their new technology that pushes content from your mobile device to your TV. Well, they’ve found a hardware partner in D-Link, and they are working closely to develop a hardware solution to bring this new technology to the masses. In a nutshell, the device works by first finding content on your mobile device, and then “snapping it” to your TV to watch on the big screen. The software will also let you discover additional content based on what you push manually. William Brown, Associate Vice President, Product Development of D-Link, had the following to say on the subject:
“D-Link is committed to bringing to consumers innovative TV products that make discovering and enjoying entertainment on the Internet easier. We believe that Snapstick has the right approach to bringing the Web to the big screen and D-Link is working closely with Snapstick to evaluate launching a commercial retail product.”
The product aims to have an edge over Google TV in the amount of content which can be accessed on a Snapstick device, including currently blocked content like Hulu, Fox, and Comedy Central. Continue after the break for the full press release, and for a link to the demo video in case you missed it the first time.
Earlier today we told you that Vizio has formally announced their Google TV offerings a couple days before CES, which came via press release. We now know that the company will be releasing Google TV powered HDTVs and Blu-ray players, but there is something else that struck me about the press release that will be very exciting if true. The image above was included in the press release, which clearly shows one of their Google TV powered HDTVs with a lot more apps than the Google TV we know today.
It is entirely possible that this is just a mockup image meant to generate some buzz and excitement about the product, or perhaps this is what they intend the interface to look like once the Market is released sometime this year. However, with Vizio supposedly planning to show off their new device(s) at CES, perhaps we will get to see an early build of the next version of Google TV featuring the Android Market. We will be there beginning on Wednesday to bring you all the latest and greatest, and we will certainly do our best to get a sneak peak at the new goods! Stay tuned.
Security firm McAfee has released a report projecting which technologies will be the most susceptible to viruses, malware and spyware in 2011, and Google TV has made the cut. Joining the ranks of smartphones, URL shortening services, geolocation services like Foursquare, and Apple products, Google TV can potentially fall victim to malicious apps and phishing sites which will give an attacker access to a user’s personal information.
Now before you go dust off your tinfoil hat, understand that just about any piece of technology can be compromised, so there is no reason to dump your Google TV device in favor of another offering. Google TV is based on Android, and like any other OS, Android comes with its fair share of vulnerabilities and bugs. Like most things in life, you just have to use some common sense and be careful which sites you visit, which email links you open, and when the time comes, which apps you install. Rest assured though, that if evidence of a major security threat to Google TV becomes known, we’ll have all the details for you.

Happy New Year everyone! You may have noticed that we took a little mini-vacation after Christmas, but we are back and ready to roll. First up is a photo that landed in our inbox showing the Logitech Revue on sale at Costco for a pretty sweet price of $229.99 after a $50 instant rebate. The Revue is still $50 off from Logitech and Amazon, but you can save $20 and get it right away (in-store only) if you have a Costco membership. We’re not sure how long the sale will be going on for, but something tells me the price will stay at $229.99 for a little while at least.
[cheers Ricky]
