Your source for everything Google TV

Hey everyone, remember a few weeks back when we speculated that Logitech may be pulling out of Google TV? Well, as it turns out, it looks like we were right. As stated by Logitech’s CEO Guerrino De Luca, Logitech is done with Google TV:

To make the long story short, we thought we had invented [sliced] bread and we just made them. [We made a commitment to] just build a lot because we expected everybody to line up for Christmas and buy these boxes [at] $300 [...] that was a big mistake.

While Logitech still undoubtedly hopes to unload their remaining stock of Revues with what may be a renewed wave of interest with the Honeycomb update, their work on Google TV is done. De Luca noted that while Google TV may have marketplace success in the future, he believed any notable success is still a long way off, and that Logitech will not be involved if and when that success occurs.

Logitech, which “executed a full scale launch with a beta product” (De Luca), lost $100 million dollars when consumer demand failed to (even remotely) meet expectations. It really must have hurt if they are swearing off Google TV forever, despite acknowledging that it may still have a significant future. If Logitech is out, should Google worry about losing Sony, which has also suffered significant losses as a result of low Google TV interest? Stay tuned to find out.

Honestly not that Logitech wasn’t a bad company to partner with but a I think the fact that they are not a major electronics manufacturer didn’t help on top of the fact that the price was way too high for what it did… $299.99? Seriously? Right when Apple was releasing a $99.99 version of Apple TV last year? $299.99 for a Blu-ray player or 24″ TV version was plausible… But just a simple box that added a layer of internet to your TV was not worth that price… It should have launched at $149.99 or they shouldn’t even have bothered… Google should have never used the x86 architecture if they couldn’t get any cheaper than $299.99…

Turns out you were right? I remember that article, then four days later you changed your mind and said they were NOT pulling the plug on GTV. http://www.gtvhub.com/2011/10/27/logitech-still-in-the-game-new-improved-revue-packaging-hits-shelves/

So, I guess you would have been right either way, good game.

I stand behind Logitech,I just their CEO De Luca, has more faith in a box of donuts than  the Logitech Revue..If I were a Chairman of Logitech,I’d like to see a change in the CEO..they were a LEADING FORCE getting Google TV into the mainstream..now 12 other companies will pick up the scraps and make millions that Logitech chickened out on

The Revue is a brilliant piece of hardware, only at launch back in 2010 it was lacking in preparation to assure the best installation user experience. Almost one year later when the 3.1 Android upgrade is now out it is closer to a shape it would have needed at launch (Android 3.1, Market, Developer support with full adb debugging capbility). Little would be needed today to adapt the unit further for international channel providers. Logitech really missed out on potential future revenues by declaring the US launch a catastrophe. Due to all the returns and price dumping Logitech lost huge amounts of millions of dollars and pulled out. But, as the device stands today it is a brilliant piece of equipment and for a Google TV app developer this device is amazingly useful and efficient for testing out and debugging TV enabled apps before publishing.   I have amassed several of them to keep handy in various development/demo activities.
